Sync Things GTD with DropBox

Dropbox and the new version of Things gives you an effortless way of keeping your Things database in sync across multiple mac’s.

The new version of Things supports the iTunes style library switching where you hold down your option key when you open the program. The problem is, choosing a web-based location is not possible. The update was meant to give you the ability to store your Things library on a thumb drive and take it with you, but with dropbox there is no need to bother with that.

To place your Things library on your Dropbox:

  1. Quit Things
  2. Move your Library/Application Support/Cultured Code/Things directory to your Dropbox
  3. Hold down the option key while opening Things
  4. Choose your dropbox as the new location of your Things database

That’s it! Dropbox will now keep your Things library in sync across multiple macs, and will auto update whenever you make changes to it. You also have the option of downloading your database via the web interface if you ever need to use it on someone elses computer.

This is *exactly* what I’ve been looking for! I tried to do the same thing with iDisk but DropBox does a much better job at keeping things up to date.

They’ve done a great thing here.

I’m still going back & forth on splitting my GTD into two, one for myself and one for “Home” type tasks that my husband and I share.

We both use Dropbox and love it, so this is a great way for us to stay in sync without RTM. RTM is great but for gtd it gets a bit messy and I’ve grown past the basic todo list, plus the interface is way too heavy and slow at times.

I’m hoping that future versions of Things will give you the ability to email tasks that you put under Contacts, similar to the way you would do an ical meeting request. Reguardless with the xml format, someone will come up with something..

Wow, I really can’t wait to get my hands on Dropbox. It looks phenomenal and will really open a lot of possibilities for applications like this. I hope they hurry up and open the beta to more people!

I have been wanting to try this system out myself, any invites would greatly be appreciated. Thanks

Sorry, I tried to share a folder with you, but I guess you can only invite 3 people.

That’s a great idea! I use DropBox but never thought to use it for that.
